Debra Wesselmann

Debra Wesselmann travaille depuis une trentaine d’années avec des adultes, des enfants et des familles aux prises avec des problèmes liés à l’attachement et aux traumatismes.

Debra est facilitateur et superviseur EMDR. Elle fait partie du comité de rédaction du Journal of EMDR Practice and Research. Elle est l’auteur ou le co-auteur de plusieurs articles, chapitres et livres. Elle fait des présentations au niveau national et international et propose des formations.

Je suis mariée depuis 40 ans et j’ai des enfants et des petits-enfants. J’ai commencé ma vie d’adulte en tant qu’institutrice et mère de trois enfants et de deux beaux-enfants. Le retour de Corée de notre fille cadette, à l’âge de 2 ans et demi, en 1985, a marqué le début de ma quête d’une meilleure compréhension de l’adoption, de l’attachement et des traumatismes, et ma décision de reprendre des études supérieures à l’Université du Nebraska à Omaha.

En 1994, j’ai participé à une formation à Denver qui a provoqué un autre changement cosmique dans ma vie professionnelle : la formation portait sur la désensibilisation et le retraitement par les mouvements oculaires (EMDR), une méthode de traitement des traumatismes découverte et développée par Francine Shapiro, docteur en médecine. Mes expériences avec la méthode après la formation ont été si fortes que j’ai finalement décidé de continuer pour devenir facilitatrice EMDR, superviseur EMDR certifiée et coordinatrice régionale EMDR, avec ma bonne amie et collègue Ardi Schoonover. Bien qu’il ne s’agisse pas d’une solution miracle, l’EMDR était la modalité de traitement la plus efficace que j’avais rencontrée, lorsqu’elle était associée à d’autres méthodes éprouvées.

J’ai continué à apprendre tout ce que je pouvais sur les traumatismes et l’attachement et j’ai eu l’inspiration d’écrire The Whole Parent : How to Become a Terrific Parent Even if You Didn’t Have One (Perseus, 1998) pour les parents ayant un passé traumatique ou difficile. Vers 1998, j’ai commencé à dispenser des formations sur le traitement de l’attachement et des traumatismes chez les enfants et les adultes, l’adoption, la parentalité et l’application de l’EMDR aux traumatismes d’attachement. J’ai notamment été invitée à présenter des exposés à la Menninger Clinic, à l’EMDRIA, aux conférences européennes EMDR de Rome, Amsterdam, Hambourg, Cologne, Madrid et des Pays-Bas, à la conférence nationale EMDR des Pays-Bas et au Costa Rica.

Pendant quatorze ans, j’ai exercé au sein de Therapy Resource Associates, à Omaha, avec un merveilleux groupe de professionnels qui ont joué un rôle énorme dans mon développement professionnel et personnel. En cours de route, j’ai participé à des projets de recherche avec mes collègues Ann Potter, Ph.D. et Meghan Davidson, Ph.D. à l’Université du Nebraska à Lincoln. J’ai également continué à écrire des articles et des chapitres.

En 2008, un groupe de collègues partageant les mêmes idées que moi a fondé un petit centre privé dans le but de développer et de fournir un traitement efficace et de qualité pour les enfants et les adultes touchés par un traumatisme d’attachement. Nous avons actuellement un groupe de douze professionnels merveilleux et compétents qui fournissent également une thérapie comportementale dialectique, une EMDR, une thérapie de couple et une thérapie familiale.

Cathy Schweitzer, Stefanie Armstrong et moi-même avons mis au point une thérapie familiale intégrative et un traitement EMDR en équipe qui se sont avérés efficaces pour aider les enfants ayant un passé d’orphelinat et de famille d’accueil et présentant des comportements difficiles. Avec l’aide de Meghan Davidson, Ph.D., de l’UNL, nous avons réalisé une étude de résultats portant sur 23 cas, que nous soumettrons bientôt à la publication. Notre livre, Integrative Treatment for Attachment Trauma in Children : Family Therapy and EMDR est un guide pour les cliniciens sur notre modèle et Integrative Parenting : Strategies for Raising Children Affected by Attachment Trauma est le guide des parents qui l’accompagne (W.W.Norton, 2014).

Publications

Debra est l’auteur ou le co-auteur de plusieurs articles, chapitres et livres.

Elle a co-écrit deux chapitres avec Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., la fondatrice de la thérapie EMDR.

Debra a participé à des projets de recherche avec ses collègues Ann Potter, Ph.D. et Meghan Davidson, Ph.D. à l’Université du Nebraska à Lincoln.
