Le fardeau mondial des traumatismes au XXIe siècle est un phénomène qui ne peut être surestimé. Le monde est aujourd’hui confronté à un nombre sans précédent d’urgences humanitaires provoquées par les conséquences d’atrocités humaines et de catastrophes naturelles. À l’heure actuelle, le nombre de réfugiés et de personnes déplacées à l’intérieur de leur propre pays est à son niveau le plus élevé depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale. L’une des conséquences inévitables des conflits est leur capacité à générer un grand nombre de personnes vulnérables aux effets des traumatismes psychologiques, à savoir le stress traumatique. Les définitions du stress traumatique ne font pas l’objet d’un consensus ; toutefois, le traumatisme est une réponse émotionnelle à un événement terrible tel qu’un accident, un viol ou une catastrophe naturelle, dont les symptômes post-événement typiques comprennent le choc, le déni, des émotions imprévisibles, des flashbacks, des relations tendues et même des symptômes physiques comme des maux de tête ou des nausées.  Cependant, lors d’un conflit prolongé, les expériences traumatiques sont plus répétitives et fréquemment aggravées par des facteurs tels que le déni, le secret, la rétribution et la vengeance.
